Understanding Fibromyalgia, Warrnambool

My understanding of Fibromyalgia when I first became a chiropractor in Warrnambool was, ‘these are the difficult patients’. My knowledge has grown a lot since then and those difficult patients are no longer difficult, they just require a totally different approach!!

People that live with Fibromyalgia know pain very well, they generally have a really high pain threshold and that’s because they’re in pain every single day. It’s more than daily pain though, it’s fatigue, brain fog, mood disturbances and feeling unrefreshed even after a long night’s sleep.

Fibromyalgia doesn’t stem from damaged tissues, but from how the nervous system interprets and amplifies pain signals. It’s like the brain has turned the pain volume up to maximum and forgotten how to turn it back down.

Are you someone in Warrnambool that has Fibromyalgia? Perhaps you know someone that has it?

People with Fibromyalgia respond well to exercise, but only if that exercise doesn’t flare up their pain. Reducing fear of movement will help the brain learn new patterns related to pain.

And sometimes having help from a psychotherapist will assist with emotional health. Hey guess what? We have informed psychotherapists and chiropractors trained specifically to treat Fibromyalgia in Warrnambool.

Acupuncture, dry needling, motor imagery therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and pain education are the most effective treatments. Oh and a special form of touch, that activates the body's C-Tactile fibers, that tells the patient with Fibromyalgia, touch is safe and can be pleasant, not always painful.

Less effective treatments? Opioids are generally ineffective for fibromyalgia and surgery is typically not recommended.

If you have Fibromyalgia in Warrnambool, I want you to know that your pain is real.

It isn’t in your imagination. Your nervous system is more sensitive to pain, the volume knob of pain is turned up!

With consistent support and a personalised care plan, we see our patients return to activities that bring them joy.
